Samsung Pushes Apple into Distant Second in Chinese Phone Market

Published on:

Samsung has retained its place as the largest single mobile phone vendor in China, according to market data from iResearch.

Samsung took a 32.3 percent market share, with arch-rival Apple a distant second with 14.3 percent of the market.

However, the report noted that Samsung phones sell for an average retail price that is less than half that Apple is able to command - RMB2,100 vs RMB5,100.

Apple has been long rumoured to be working on a lower-cost version of its iPhone to help the company expand its market share outside its core developed markets. The market share and price differential in China offers a strong example of how the company is being held back by its reliance on premium price points.
