Telecoms Specialists Can Still Find Well Paid Jobs - if They are Prepared to Travel
Brazil, Nigeria and South Africa are the top three countries to find a job in telecoms in 2009 according to recruitment consultancy, NetworkersMSB. Other countries in the top 10 offering workers the unbeatable combination of sunshine, a good salary and lower living costs are Saudi Arabia and the USA.
"Experienced project and programme managers with knowledge of 3G and IP are in great demand in countries where these skills are not available locally," says Scott Simons, Head of Telecoms at NetworkersMSB. "Candidates who are flexible, adaptable and able to travel at short notice could find themselves living a whole new life on the other side of the world within weeks."
The ideal profile of a telecoms contractor is a single male or female between the ages of 30 and 40, with the highest paid positions including RF engineers on new network builds or rollouts, or people with niche skills such as billing, IP or design.
"Currently, engineers in South Africa can expect to earn between $8-10,000 per month with accommodation and relocation expenses thrown in," says Scott.
NetworkersMSB predicts the demand for skilled ex-pats will continue into 2011, by which time the telecoms job situation in the UK should have picked up. "In the meantime", says Scott, "a period abroad, experiencing new cultures and possibly even learning a new language, can only improve your employability when the upturn comes."
