T-Mobile USA Expands 3G Coverage to 13 Cities

Published on: 18th September 2008

T-Mobile USA has announced the expansion of its 3G coverage to 13 major markets and the signing of a raft of new backhaul agreements to cope with the increased traffic across its network. T-Mobile USA confirmed that it was on track to expand its 3G service to 27 major markets in the United States by the end of 2008.

The planned expansion is expected to deliver T-Mobile 3G services to more than two-thirds of T-Mobile's current data customers, with meaningful expansion to additional customers and markets through 2009.

T-Mobile's 3G network is currently available across 13 major metropolitan markets: Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Miami, Minneapolis, New York (including northern New Jersey and Long Island), Phoenix, Portland, San Antonio and San Diego.

The company plans to expand its service by mid-October to additional markets, including Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Orlando, Philadelphia, Sacramento, San Francisco and Seattle.

An additional six markets -- Birmingham, Denver, Detroit, Kansas City, Memphis and Tampa -- are expected to have the network available before the end of the year, increasing the number of markets with T-Mobile's 3G network to 27 markets

The separately announced backhaul agreements cover sites in Tampa, Fla., Orlando, Fla., South Florida, San Francisco, Philadelphia and Memphis, Tenn. When fully implemented over the next six to 18 months, these deployments will help to enable T-Mobile to deliver 3G services in a significantly less expensive manner. They will also expand existing network capacity and bandwidth to accommodate new, data-hungry mobile services and applications using HSDPA technology.

Each of these providers, in some of the most dynamic U.S. markets, operate an all-fiber network capable of providing capacity several times in excess of current requirements and allowing substantial room for future growth.

Figures from the Mobile World subscriber tracker report that T-Mobile ended the first half of this year with just under 31.5 million customers - and a national market share of just over 12%.
