The UK's Portable Navigation (PND) market grew to over 2.7 million units in the period July 07 to June 08 - a rise of nearly 50 % compared to the previous year. This buoyancy also led to a strong sales value, which rose by 10.6% over the same period to reach £428.4 million (US$800 million), according to GfK Retail and Technology.
Looking at June 2008 compared to June 2007, the figures were equally as impressive. Sales volume of 209,500 units and sales value of £28.2 million represented growth of 51.5% and 6.5% respectively on the same period last year.
Falling average prices have undoubtedly helped to increase the appeal of these devices and the growth of the sub £100 sector is illustrative of the increasing mass market status of these products. Indeed this price bracket was responsible for 21% of all sales units in June 08, compared to just 10.1% in January 08. However the £100-149.99 continues to occupy the largest share of sales volume and accounted for 51% of all units sold in the latest period. The average price of a Portable Navigation unit was £134 in June 08, falling from £191 in June 07.
Looking ahead, the seasonal uplift in sales felt in both the summer months and of course the festive period should help to maintain growth in volume and value within this sector for the duration of 2008.
